The Collected Bathroom: Creating a Warm, Timeless Retreat with Vintage Character

Bathrooms are often designed around practicality—and understandably so. But the rooms we use every morning and return to at the end of a long day deserve just as much personality as the rest of our homes.

For The Collected Bathroom, I wanted to move beyond the perfectly polished, all-white bathroom and create something warmer. A space with beautiful materials, useful everyday pieces, a little vintage character and the feeling that it has evolved over time.

Think warm wood against stone. A beautiful old-world mirror above a modern vanity. Soft towels beside aged brass. Artwork you might expect to find in a living room. Candlelight, natural textures and a deep tub waiting at the end of the day.

The goal isn't to fill the room with more things. It's to choose the right things—the details that make a bathroom feel less utilitarian and more like a retreat.

I’ve gathered my favourite bathroom finds into The Collected Bathroom on my Amazon Storefront—from warm brass accents and vintage-inspired artwork to towels, bath accessories, storage and those finishing details that give a room character.

Begin With Something That Gives the Room Character

One of the easiest ways to keep a bathroom from feeling generic is to introduce something that doesn't look as though it came with the room.

An antique-inspired wood vanity is a beautiful example.

Against marble, porcelain or contemporary tile, the warmth and imperfection of wood immediately soften all those hard surfaces. You get contrast without sacrificing sophistication.

If replacing a vanity isn't practical, you can create a similar effect through smaller pieces: a wooden stool beside the tub, a teak bath tray, an aged frame or a warm woven basket.

That juxtaposition of old and new is at the heart of the collected look.

Let Your Lighting Do More Than Illuminate

Lighting has an enormous influence on how a bathroom feels.

Instead of relying solely on recessed ceiling lights, layer your lighting wherever possible. Fabric-shaded sconces can soften a vanity area, while a beautiful chandelier or pendant can give a larger bathroom an unexpected sense of intimacy.

Warm brass, aged bronze and antique-inspired finishes are particularly beautiful against neutral stone and moody paint colours.

And don't underestimate candlelight.

A candle beside the tub or on the vanity adds very little physically to the room, yet completely changes the experience of being in it.

Bring Artwork Into the Bathroom

Artwork may be one of my favourite ways to give a bathroom personality.

Rather than choosing something obviously "bathroom themed," look for artwork you would happily hang elsewhere in your home.

A vintage landscape, European village scene, botanical print or softly coloured oil-style painting introduces history and helps break up expanses of tile and cabinetry.

It's also an easy way to experiment with the collected aesthetic without renovating anything.

A bathroom should still feel connected to the rest of your home. The art is one of the simplest ways to make that happen.

Warm Up Modern Finishes

There's nothing wrong with a beautiful modern bathroom. In fact, its simplicity makes a wonderful backdrop for collected pieces.

The trick is adding contrast.

If your bathroom has white cabinetry, marble-look tile and glass, introduce materials with visual warmth: aged brass, wood, woven fibres, pottery, linen and softly textured towels.

Likewise, if you're starting with a darker, moodier bathroom, creamy textiles, warm metals and natural wood can keep it from feeling heavy.

You don't need everything to match.

In fact, a room often becomes more interesting when the finishes feel coordinated rather than identical.

Make Everyday Essentials Part of the Decorating

Some of the most successful additions to a bathroom are also the most practical.

Pretty soap dispensers, lidded glass canisters, trays, hand towels, bath mats and baskets all have jobs to do—but they can still contribute to the room.

Instead of hiding every everyday item, think about how the things you use regularly can become part of the overall composition.

An amber soap dispenser beside a small ceramic dish feels intentional. Cotton rounds and swabs stored in beautiful lidded containers become part of the vanity styling. Rolled towels in a woven basket add softness and texture.

Practical and beautiful can absolutely coexist.

Create a Little Ritual Around the Tub

If you're fortunate enough to have a soaking tub, this is where I'd allow the bathroom to become particularly indulgent.

Not extravagant—just thoughtful.

A small wooden stool beside the tub provides somewhere for a towel or candle. A teak bath tray can hold a book and bath soak. Soft towels within reach and a favourite candle nearby turn an ordinary bath into something you actually look forward to.

These are the little luxuries that make home feel good.

And that's really what Collected Living is about—not creating rooms purely for photographs, but creating rooms that make everyday life feel a little better.

Don't Forget Texture

Bathrooms contain so many naturally hard surfaces that they need softness.

Layer in waffle-weave towels, a textured bath mat, a woven Roman shade, baskets or a casually draped hand towel. Even greenery can soften the geometry of cabinetry, tile and glass.

You don't need all of these elements in one room. A few thoughtfully chosen textures are usually more effective than filling every surface.

Collected doesn't mean cluttered.

The room should still have breathing space.

Add Something Slightly Unexpected

This may be the detail that makes a collected bathroom truly memorable.

Maybe it's an antique mirror.

Maybe it's a little wooden stool that looks as though it came from an old farmhouse.

Perhaps it's a beautiful painting, an ornate brass towel ring or a vintage-inspired chandelier that feels almost too lovely for a bathroom.

Those are often the pieces that give a room its soul.

When everything is new, coordinated and perfectly matched, a room can sometimes feel like a showroom. One or two unexpected pieces interrupt that perfection and make the space feel personal.

The Collected Bathroom

Ultimately, creating a beautiful bathroom isn't about following one particular decorating style.

It's about layering together pieces that make the room feel like you.

Mix modern with vintage. Pair polished stone with weathered wood. Let brass develop character. Hang real artwork. Bring in beautiful textiles. Keep the everyday necessities attractive enough to leave within reach.

And leave a little room for the space to evolve.

That's how a bathroom begins to feel collected rather than decorated—and how an ordinary part of the home can become somewhere you genuinely look forward to spending time.

Shop The Look

If you'd like to bring some of these ideas into your own home, I've curated The Collected Bathroom with pieces chosen to add warmth, function and character—from vintage-inspired mirrors and lighting to towels, bath accessories, artwork, storage and those smaller finishing touches that pull everything together.

Every beautiful day begins at home.
