The Top 5 Design Mistakes Designers Notice Instantly (And Simple Ways to Fix Them)

There’s something interesting about walking into a home as a designer—you notice things almost immediately. Not in a critical way, but in that “this space could feel so much better with just a few small tweaks” kind of way.
The good news? Most of the common design mistakes I see are incredibly easy (and affordable) to fix. You don’t need a full renovation—you just need a few thoughtful adjustments.
Let’s walk through the top five.

1. Furniture That’s the Wrong Size… or Just Not Placed Well
This is one of the biggest ones—and it shows up in a few different ways.
I often see:
Sofas that are too large and overwhelm the room
Furniture that’s too small and feels disconnected
Pieces pushed up against walls “just because”
Layouts that make conversation feel awkward
Why it matters:
Even beautiful furniture won’t work if the scale is off or the layout doesn’t flow. A room should feel balanced, comfortable, and easy to move through.
Simple Fix:
Choose furniture that suits the scale of your room (not too big, not too small)
Pull furniture slightly away from walls to create a more intentional layout
Arrange seating so it naturally encourages conversation
Use rugs to anchor and define the space
When furniture is the right size and thoughtfully placed, everything else starts to fall into place.

2. Curtains Hung Too Low (and the Wrong Length)
This is one designers spot instantly—and it makes a bigger difference than most people realize.
I often see:
Curtain rods mounted just above the window frame
Panels that are too short and “hover” above the floor
Curtains that feel skimpy or narrow
Why it matters:
Curtains have the ability to visually heighten a room and add softness—but only when they’re done correctly.
Simple Fix:
Hang curtain rods higher—closer to the ceiling, not just above the window
Choose panels that either just kiss the floor or have a slight, elegant drape
Go wider than the window so curtains frame it properly when open
This one small adjustment can make your ceilings feel taller and your room feel more finished.

3. Lighting That Falls Flat
Lighting is often overlooked—and yet it’s one of the most powerful design tools you have.
Many homes rely on:
One overhead light
Harsh, cool-toned bulbs
No layering of light sources
Why it matters:
Lighting sets the mood. Without layers, a space can feel cold, flat, and uninviting.
Simple Fix:
Add at least 2–3 light sources per room (lamps, sconces, floor lighting)
Use warm bulbs for a cozy, welcoming glow
Think in layers: ambient, task, and accent lighting
This one change alone can make your home feel instantly more inviting.

4. Art Hung Too High (or Too Small)
This is something designers notice in seconds.
Artwork is often:
Hung too close to the ceiling
Too small for the wall
Floating without connection to furniture
Why it matters:
Art should feel grounded and intentional—not like it’s drifting.
Simple Fix:
Hang art so the center is at eye level (roughly 57–60 inches from the floor)
When placing above furniture, keep it 6–10 inches above the piece
Go bigger than you think—you’ll rarely regret it
Well-placed art makes a space feel finished.

5. Too Many Small Decor Pieces (or Not Enough Personality)
This is where a space can go in two very different directions—and neither quite works.
I often see:
Lots of tiny decor items scattered around (visual clutter)
Or the opposite—spaces that feel a little too “perfect” and untouched
Why it matters:
A home should feel curated, not crowded—but also lived-in and personal.
Simple Fix:
Group decor in odd numbers and vary height and texture
Edit down smaller items and focus on a few impactful pieces
Add personal touches—books, meaningful objects, layered textiles
The goal is balance: styled, but still warm and inviting.

Bringing It All Together
Here’s what I’ve learned over the years:
It’s rarely about starting over—it’s about refining what you already have.
Raise your curtain rods.
Rework your furniture layout.
Swap out a light bulb.
Edit your decor.
Small shifts… big impact.
If something in your home has been feeling “off” and you couldn’t quite put your finger on it, chances are one of these is the reason—and now you know exactly how to fix it.
